STUDENT VOLUNTEER PROGRAM
The values of gratitude, community responsibility, and assisting one’s fellow man are basic necessary virtues for a healthy society. Therefore, the board encourages the utilization of student volunteers in the educational program (e.g., student librarians, student office helpers, etc.) and in useful community services. Student volunteer clubs, sponsored by volunteer coordinators, may be formed in the K-8 grade levels. At the high school level, however, the board encourages the facilitation of volunteerism through established clubs, activities, and individual efforts. These efforts may be tracked and recognized in an appropriate and organized manner by a volunteer coordinator. The board authorizes and encourages the high school registrar to post documented volunteer hours, provided by the district volunteer coordinator, on high school transcripts.
It is important, however, that student volunteers must be capable of carrying out additional responsibilities without sacrificing academic achievement. Volunteer efforts must not infringe on class attendance. All individuals involved must recognize that the student’s primary goal and responsibility is obtaining an education.
In keeping with these requirements, teachers, volunteer coordinators, and members of the community are asked to request student volunteers through the school office and with the authorization of the guidance counselor and the principal.
